As academic programs convert to an entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree and more graduates enter the work force with doctoral degrees, Boston University is committed to meeting the needs of practicing clinicians. The transitional DPT program bridges the gap between BS/MS degree entry-level practitioners and the current DPT entry-level graduate. The transitional DPT offers an opportunity to complement current knowledge and skills with advanced content designed to promote a high level of competence and autonomy.

The program is designed to prepare students to:

  • Practice patient/client management as a competent and independent primary, secondary and tertiary care provider, using evidence and theory-based practice, in a cost-effective manner in diverse settings in a changing health care environment;
  • Evaluate clinical research and use research findings to enhance knowledge and clinical practice in the area of human movement disorders to restore functional movement and mitigate behavioral changes in patients;
  • Provide leadership in the challenging and evolving health care and rehabilitation systems by applying supervisory, management, communication and critical thinking skills to become contributing effective team members, lifelong learners and advocates for patient, the public and the profession.

The basic professional physical therapy program leading to the degree Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) is designed for those possessing a baccalaureate degree in another area who wish to become qualified as physical therapists. Individuals who are current physical therapists may pursue the DPT degree as a post-professional degree through the transitional DPT degree (tDPT) program. Admission to the DPT degree requires a baccalaureate degree, 11 course prerequisites, the scores on the aptitude portion of the GRE and 3 letters of reference. Admission to the transitional DPT program requires the completion of an entry-level physical therapy program, references and evidence of 6 months of full-time clinical employment.
